Pirates, Orcas tie in a storm

After some early-season struggles, the Peninsula College men's soccer team is looking like the same team that made last year's NWAACC final four.
The Pirates ran their unbeaten streak to four games with a 2-2 tie against North Division-leading Whatcom on Saturday, getting the equalizer from a new school record holder.
With Peninsula down 2-1 and battling rain, wind and the host Whatcom Orcas (5-2-2 in conference), John Troka chipped in a corner kick to Ernest Boham, who directed it into the net from 20 yards out.
It was Boham's fourth goal of the season and 17th overall, breaking Seth Ransom's two-year mark of 16 scores.
"He has been shooting for this record for a long time and it is great that he finally reached it ... especially with the goal he had today," Peninsula coach Andrew Chapman said.
Orca Romulo Perez opened the scoring with a header off a fine cross at 15 minutes. Troka, a freshman from Kingston, got fouled in the penalty box at 36 minutes and tied the game with a penalty kick.
Whatcom's Mirza Memic put the Orcas ahead just before halftime when a bad deflection got past Peninsula keeper Jase Hall.
Bad weather kept the number of shots down: Peninsula had six; Whatcom, just four.
"Under the weather conditions and the fact we were on the road again, we played really well," Chapman said. "We controlled most of the game."
The Pirates host division-leading Highline on Oct. 8 and Tacoma on Oct. 15.
