Pirates go 2-1 at Oregon tournament

After shooting a disappointing 28 percent in an opening-round loss to Mount Hood and having their next opponent forfeit their second game, the Peninsula College women's basketball team got a win on the hardcourt Sunday, topping Blue Mountain 67-47 for sixth place overall at the Clackamas Thanksgiving Invitational in Clackamas, Ore.
Sam Flett led the Pirates with 20 points and six steals while teammate Krystal Tolliver added 14 points and Dena Houser had 13 points as Peninsula routed the Timberwolves.
Peninsula held Blue Mountain to just 20-percent shooting, including 3-of-14 (14 percent) from three-point range.
The Pirates (2-1) also got a solid contribution from post Brittany Bridges who chipped in with six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
In Peninsula's opening tournament game against Mount Hood, the Pirates couldn't find the basket, shooting just 28 percent from the field, while Jacki Cunningham went off for 20 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
The Saints led by 13 points at halftime and both teams managed to score 34 points in the second half.
Flett once again led the team with 15 points, 11 rebounds and added three steals, but had 10 of Peninsula's 20 turnovers. Britney Yamane added 14 points and seven rebounds while Brittany Bridges collected 11 rebounds. Peninsula had just two assists in the game and hit just one of nine three-point tries.
Relegated to the consolation bracket, Peninsula looked to take on a beleaguered and shorthanded Gray Harbor team. But after getting shellacked by Clackamas 98-32 in the opening round, the aptly-named Chokers pulled out of the tourney.
That gave Peninsula another chance at an on-the-court victory.
The Pirates are back in action Dec. 5-7 in the Raiders Invitational Tournament at Pierce College in Lakewood.
