When Clay Charlie and other Sequim High School wrestlers realized they might come up a bit short of their 2,300-pound goal, he decided to use his head.

Or rather, his hair.

Charlie had much of his curly mane sheared for a donated $100 worth of food as Sequim High's wrestlers exceeded their "Pound for Pound: We Are Worth Our Weight in Food" food-raiser goal Dec. 7.

The varsity and junior varsity wrestling squads collected food donations at Safeway for the Sequim Food Bank, challenging each other and the community to come up with at least the total weight of varsity and junior varsity squads - about 2,300 pounds.

Wrestlers from both teams were on hand, weighing donations and passing out information about the team. By 4 p.m., the team was close to their goal but needed a boost. They got it with Charlie's hair-razing effort, ending up with about 3,000 pounds of food.

Stephen Rosales, volunteer with the food bank, said the team's food-raiser and other donations helped feed 1,400 families in the Sequim area.

Rosales thanked team members before the Wolves' match against Port Angeles Jan. 8, inviting them to a food-raiser of their own: a season-ending pizza feed at the Boys & Girls Club.
