Wolves extend season, split with Bucs, Vikings

Sequim's boys swimming squad earned its first postseason berth in the first event at a double-dual meet against North Kitsap and Kingston in Sequim on Jan. 13.
The Wolves' 200 medley relay swimmers Alex Skinner, Parker Steichen, Thomas Moores and Triston Cortani posted a 2:06.71 finish, 1.5 seconds under the West Central District-qualifying time.
Sequim split the dual meet, clobbering Kingston 117-65 and getting edged by North Kitsap's Vikings, 93-90.
Freshman Noe Calderon impressed once again, posting two individual wins. His 200 individual medley mark (2:29.18) is Sequim's best this season and a district meet-qualifying time. He also posted a win in the 100 backstroke (1:10.65) and, with teammates Cortani, Steichen and Max Flock, helped the 200 free relay team get a win.
Steichen won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:19.50 finish.
Sequim had the only divers in the pool, and Frank Catelli's 127.25-point effort took first.
Moores broke the one-minute mark with his second-place finish in the 100 free (59.95) and is just a couple of seconds from a district-qualifying time.
Sequim's 400 free relay team (Calderon, Flock, Moores and Skinner) dropped their previous best by seven seconds.
Junior varsity swimmer Michael Okamoto dropped his 50 free time to 30.04 seconds, a strong effort from a rookie swimmer, Sequim coach Linda Bingler said.
Fellow JV swimmer Chris Merrikin dropped 16 seconds from his 100 free time to 1:12.
Rookie swimmer Jared Lindorfer posted a 1:24.79 finish in the 100 backstroke in his first attempt at the event, good for fifth place.
"Most of the team swam very well today," Bingler said.
Sequim's next meet is Jan. 22 at home against Port Angeles.
