As high school athletes make the move from outdoor fields for the warm, cozy confines of indoor basketball courts, pools and wrestling gyms, so are a number of Sequim High grads competing at the collegiate level this winter.
Staci Stratton Swimming, University of Idaho A 2007 Sequim High graduate, Stratton twice broke the Vandals' school record in the 50 free style and helped Idaho's 200 medley relay team snap the school mark last season. This year, Stratton, a junior at the University of Idaho, helped the Vandals top Nevada at their most recent meet on Dec. 4. Stratton placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (59.63) and anchored the 200-yard free relay team in its two-second win. She also swam on Idaho's second-place 400-yard medley team. Idaho beat Nevada 151-92, improving to 3-0. The Vandals are back in action on Jan. 2 at New Mexico State.
Ary Webb Basketball, Olympic College A 2009 Sequim High grad, Webb is averaging 10 points per game for the Rangers. He scored seven points, four rebounds and two assists in Olympic's Dec. 9, 84-79 home victory against Portland, evening the Rangers' record at 2-2. Webb led Olympic with 18 points in an 80-70 win against Green River on Dec. 2, sinking four first half three-pointers. He also led the team with 14 points in a loss to Pierce on Dec. 5. Webb returns to the peninsula on Jan. 2 as his Rangers take on the Peninsula College Pirates; game time is 7:30 p.m.
Kincaid Nichols Track & Field (indoor), Central Washington University A sophomore at Central Washington, Nichols and the Wildcats start their indoor track season at the University of Washington Indoor Preview in Seattle on Jan. 16, followed by the U.W. Invitational in Seattle Jan. 29-30 and the Vandal Indoor meet in Moscow, Idaho, on Feb. 5. Nichols specializes in the 100-meter dash and long jump events. Nichols is a 2008 graduate of Sequim High School.
Kelsey Langston Basketball, Cottey College A 5-foot 9-inch sophomore forward at Cottey, Langston and the Comets are 5-5 nearing the end of the first semester break. The Comets swept Rhema Bible College 79-65 on Nov. 20 and upset Redlands Community College 69-54 on Nov. 21. Langston is a 2008 graduate of Sequim High.
Joe Hutchison and Ethan Hinton Wrestling, Southern Oregon University A pair of wrestlers linked by their strong performances at Sequim High School (both placed in the top eight at state their final two seasons) and graduation year, Hinton and Hutchison are grappling for one of the top teams in the NAIA ranks. Entering the season, the Raiders were ranked No. 1 in the preseason coaches' poll.
Hinton went 1-2 in the pool wrestling portion and 1-2 in the championship bracket of the Southern Oregon Open on Nov. 14, placing sixth in his 184-pound weight class. Hutchison, wrestling at 133 pounds, went 3-0 in pool matches before going 0-2 in the championship bracket at the same tourney. These 2009 Sequim High grads join the Raiders as they take on Yakima Valley at home on Dec. 31.
