P.A. hoops tourney set for March

The Port Angeles Recreation Department is hosting the Captain T's Spring Hoopfest basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 5-12. The tourney is set for March 6-7. The tournament features a four-game guarantee.

Cost is $235 per team.

YMCA offers beginning Aikido

Neilu Naini, chief instructor of Port Angeles Aikikai, teaches a class of Aikido, a Japanese martial art, at the Clallam County YMCA this spring.

The beginners program is for ages 14 and older, and meets twice a week in March and April, on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 7:10-8:10 p.m. in the YMCA mat room.

Cost is $55 for members and nonmembers of the YMCA. Students signing up before March 1 receive a $5 discount off the member rate for Aikido classes. Students should wear loose-fitting clothing that covers the knees. Training usually is done barefoot.

The course is designed to introduce techniques required for a first-ranking test.

SkyRidge hosts St. Paddy's tourney

Saturday, March 13, is SkyRidge Golf Course's Saint Paddy's tournament.

The tourney format is a four-person scramble with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Cost is $160 per team with an optional honey pot.

The event f eatures prizes and a traditional Irish stew served for lunch. A big break skills challenge follows the tourney.

Golfers are encouraged to wear kilt-and-knicker outfits, with a prize for the best-dressed "hooligan" set to be awarded.
