Cardinals curb Wolves’ state dreams

How quickly a season can turn around.

Sequim’s Wolves battled tooth-and-nail with the best teams in the Olympic League for two months but saw their drive for a state berth quashed in two days.

After a 12-2 loss to Port Angeles on May 10, Sequim needed a pair of victories last weekend to nab the West Central District’s fifth seed to state.

Instead, all they got were two hits off Franklin Pierce ace Mickey Lyons in a 5-2 loss to the Cardinals on May 14, ending their 2011 campaign.

Sequim finishes the spring with a 15-8 overall record.

Against the Cardinals, the Wolves managed a pair of singles by Tyler Campbell and Karsten Wake in the fifth inning. Two Franklin Pierce errors gave Sequim their runs and trimmed the Franklin Pierce lead to 3-2.

But the Cardinals got insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and Lyons didn’t allow a hit after that.

Campbell took the loss, giving up nine hits and two walks in five-and-two-thirds innings.

It was the final game for seven Sequim seniors: Ryan Hueter, Anthony Ignagni, Preston McFarlen, Ray Montelius, Drew Rickerson, Weston Royall and Isaac Yamamoto. Each of the graduating seniors played all four years in Sequim’s baseball program.

Roughriders rough ’em up

Port Angeles showed little mercy — and little indication they were the lower seed — in a 12-2 win against Sequim on May 10 to open district play.

Kyler Morgan and Cody Sullivan had three hits each and A.J. Konopaski shut down the Wolves’ bats in the P.A. Roughrider victory.

Sequim managed just five hits, scoring both runs in the first inning. Rickerson tripled, Campbell had a double, an RBI and a run scored and Preston McFarlen was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Rickerson took the loss on the mound.
