Golf: Estes, O'Mera cap prep season at state's second day

This Sequim High senior duo kept their seasons going as long as they could.

Sequim's Ryan O'Mera and Hailey Estes made the second-day cut at the state 2A golf championships in Spanaway, finishing with top-30 placings on Wednesday.

O'Mera, a four-time state qualifier, shot a second round 87 on May 23 to finish with a cumulative 173 score, tied for 27th overall, at The Classic Golf Club. Tyler Carlson of Clarkston won the 2A title with a 147 (76-71), while Interlake edged Clarkston for the team title.

Estes, a three-time state participant, shot a 97 in her second round at Lake Spanaway Golf Course Wednesday to finish at 193, tied for 28th overall. Cherokee Kim of Steilacoom (153) edged Kendall Gray of Fife for the individual girls 2A title, and Bellingham easily won the girls' team crown.

"The weather was awful; not the best conditions," Sequim girls coach Garrett Smithson said.

A trio of Sequim golfers participated but didn't make the first day cut Tuesday afternoon, including sophomore Maddy Fisher, junior Elisa Sallee and senior Casey Torres.

Fisher shot a 104 on Tuesday, five shots off the cut, while Sallee shot a 105.

Smithson said he likes the Wolves' chances to repeat as league champs in 2013, considering the team's youth.

"I'm still pretty confident we'll be strong, if not stronger, next year," he said.

Torres shot a first-day round of 94, seven shots from the cutoff.

Port Angeles' Joe Barnes held a one-shot lead on Clarkston's Carlson and the rest of the 2A field but faltered on day two, finishing with an 82 and in a tie for sixth. Port Angeles' boys placed fifth in the team standings.
