Only those of ages 50 and older need apply, however.
Though it’s named the Olympic Peninsula Senior Games, this annual event invites seniors from near and far to challenge each other in a number of physical or mental contests in a number of locations across Port Angeles and as far east as U.S. Highway 101 and O’Brien Road (cycling).
Participants can enter as many events as they like but should pay attention to the master schedule (see below) in case some of those events take place at the same time.
Entries must be postmarked by Aug. 16 for processing and scheduling. Registration after the deadline will be at the discretion of the commissioner for that sport and late registrants are not guaranteed a T-shirt.
There are two types of costs: registration fees and sports fees. The $20 registration fee helps offset administrative expenses such as T-shirts, food, programs, medals, emergency medical personnel and equipment and printed materials. The sports fee is $5 for each event entered with the exception of bowling ($8; also, the cost of bowling practice on Friday ($1.75) is payable directly to Laurel Lanes). Non-members of Peninsula Golf Club need to pay a greens fee of $36, payable on site.
All athletes must be at least 50 years old by Dec. 31. In those events with doubles divisions, age groups are determined by the age of the younger partner as of Dec. 31. Photo ID showing date of birth may be required at check-in. Individual age groups are: 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85-89, 90-94, 95-99 and 100+. If there is only one competitor in an age group, that person will compete in the nearest age group, but will be awarded a medal in the age appropriate group.
At the end of Senior Games, results are posted at Port Angeles Senior Center, the games headquarters, 328 E. Seventh St., and on the Olympic Peninsula Senior Games website, olympicpeninsulaseniorgames.com.
