A tough season just got tougher.

Facing the Olympic League’s two top teams last week, Sequim fell short of earning its first league win and in the process lost its top scorer to injury.

Payton Glasser, averaging 18.1 points per game coming into Friday’s matchup with North Kitsap, left the game before halftime with what head coach Greg Glasser said is a possible tear in the MCL (medial collateral ligament) of his son’s left knee.

The junior guard’s season is over, Greg Glasser said.

“It would have been nice to see what we could have done in the second half (with Payton in),” the Sequim coach said.

“We’re going to make the most of the situation,” Greg Glasser said, explaining that Payton can support the team from the bench in the Wolves’ final few games of the season. “This is something he can learn from.”

On the court, North Kitsap earned a season sweep of the Wolves with the 61-44 win on Jan. 20.

The Vikings got 16 points from Zach Olmstead, 12 from Kai Warren and nine each from Kaine Warren and Kohlten Barringer-Mahitka. NK forced 32 Sequim turnovers.

It wasn’t all easy for North Kitsap, however. Despite having their leading scorer on the bench, the Wolves were within seven points with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter before a Viking spurt gave the visitors a 45-31 lead after three quarters.

Greg Glasser praised his team’s efforts on the boards; the Wolves out-rebounded North Kitsap 29-24.

“We kept balls alive and we hit some guys,” the Sequim coach said. “We let them know we weren’t going to back down.”

Sequim got 10 points apiece from Nate Despain, Devin Greenlow and Kyler Rollness.

Payton Glasser had seven points in 13 minutes before leaving the game.

Despain had team highs in rebounds (six), assists (four) and steals (four).

Greg Glasser praised the hard work of role players like Greenlow.

“What a great night (Devin) had,” Greg Glasser said. “He made the most of every minute out there.”

Trojans take Olympic League matchup

A second quarter spurt broke open a tight early contest and gave the visiting Olympic Trojans a 58-44 win in Sequim on Jan. 17.

Tyler Yost scored 23 points and hit a pair of 3-pointers late in the third quarter to quell the Wolves comeback.

Led by the game-high 26 points from Despain, Sequim kept pace with Olympic through an 11-11 first quarter. The Trojans raced to a 34-18 lead by halftime, however.

Sequim trimmed the lead to under double digits, but Yost’s long-range shooting kept Olympic’s lead at 51-40 after three quarters and the Trojan defense held Sequim to just four fourth-quarter points.

Despain finished 11-of-16 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range to go with his eight rebounds. Payton Glasser had 14 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Apart from Despain and Glasser, the Wolves shot 1-for-22 (4.5 percent) from the field.
