Boys, Girls Golf: Wolves wrap up Olympic League titles

Haven’t we heard this one before?

Sequim’s boys and girls prep golf squads are Olympic League champions after posting undefeated 9-0 marks this spring.

The Wolves capped off their unblemished dual match records with wins over rival Port Angeles at The Cedars at Dungeness on April 24.

On the boys’ side, Andrew Vanderberg of Sequim shot a 74 for individual honors, followed closely by Blake Wiker with a 75, helping Sequim’s top four players beat PA’s four, 321-366. Port Angeles’ Mathew Locke was third with an 83.

Sequim’s boys have now gone undefeated for three consecutive years and a combined 28-0 record.

SHS’s girls made it a clean sweep with a 187-235 win over the Roughriders.

Sequim’s Sarah Shea led the way once again with a nine-hole score of 38, with Maddie Uranga second (45) and Samantha Smith third (47). Port Angeles’ Gillian Elofson (51) was fourth.

It’s the third league title for Sequim’s girls in four seasons, as they’ve amassed a 36-1 record since 2015.

“I am very happy for the girls and especially for the seniors after finishing second in the league last year,” Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said.

“The whole team worked hard to get the league title and that was a big goal for all of them to start the year.”

Sequim takes second at Higgins, fourth at Streeter

Sequim’s boys golfers placed second behind Peninsula at the 53rd-annual Tim Higgins Memorial tournament on April 28.

Peninsula won the team title with 102 Stableford points as the Seahawks finished 1-2-3 in the individual competition.

Leading runner-up Sequim were Vanderberg and Wiker, who both shot 28 to tie for fifth place individually.

On April 29, Vanderberg and Josiah Carter teamed to shoot a 5-under-par 67 in best-ball scramble format play at the 24th annual Duke Streeter Boys Golf Invitational on Friday at Peninsula Golf & Country Club.

The Wolves’ duo finished fourth overall out of 23 two-person teams.

Sequim’s second team of Garrett Hoesel and Liam Payne fired an 80.

Coming up

Players from both Sequim squads were slated to play for state and district tournament berths at the Olympic League championships on May 1 at The Cedars at Dungeness.

Top finishers earn state 2A or West Central District tourney automatic berths.

The district “second chance” tournament is May 15 in Bremerton.

This year’s state 2A tournaments are set for May 22-23 in Spokane, with the girls at Indian Canyon Golf Course and the boys playing at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.
