Boys golf: Sequim’s Wiker edges teammate for league title

A full season of strong, consistent play paid off for a trio of young Wolves and they may get some company after districts next week.

Sequim sophomore Blake Wiker edged teammate Paul Jacobsen in a playoff to win the boys title at the Olympic League golf championships May 2 at The Cedars at Dungeness in Sequim. Wiker, along with Jacobsen and fellow freshman Andrew Vanderberg (fourth place), are headed to the class 2A state tournament in Spokane later this month.

“We continued to see steady play for my one-through-three (and) it was nice to see them get a win,” Sequim coach Bill Shea said.

Wiker led for most of the tourney and it took Jacobsen shooting a 2-under par on the final nine holes to force the playoff after both carded rounds of 1-over-par 73.

Olympic’s C.J. Lagat was third, just one shot back, while Vanderberg shot a 75.

Sequim’s Josiah Carter took 13th overall and plays this week at the West Central District tourney May 16 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton. Carter and 25 others from Olympic and South Puget Sound League golfers compete for the remaining eight spots to state. (Sequim’s Liam Payne shot an 89 and will be a district alternate.)

“(Carter) has got a very good chance; he’s right there,” Shea said.

The Sequim coach credited the area’s golf course junior programs for Sequim’s success coming out of the freshman and sophomore classes.

“The clubs on the peninsula promoting junior programs … create feeder programs, getting them involved at an early age,” Shea said. “Some have been competing for six to eight years already at some club or junior golf association level (before competing at the high school level).”

Sequim’s three state and district qualifiers have somewhat disparate development backgrounds. Wiker and Carter started playing as youths at The Cedars, Shea noted, while Jacobsen played under Sunland Golf &Country Club pro Tyler Sweet. Vanderberg, meanwhile, is a recent transplant from South Africa who has plenty of junior tournament experience, Shea said.

Sequim’s boys squad may get even more of a boost from the younger ranks, Shea noted, with some strong play coming from several junior-level players at Sunland.

Looking ahead

Sequim’s trio — and Carter, depending on how the district tourney plays out — will compete at The Creek at Qualchan golf course May 23-24 in Spokane.

Shea said he expects his team to fare well, despite their underclassmen standing.

“I think they have the confidence and the ability to make the cut,” Shea said.
