Showing little rust from a week without games, Sequim’s boys soccer squad routed Olympic 9-0 on their home turf on April 10 in a match that wasn’t as close as the final score implies.

Ryan Tolberd and Mike McAleer each scored two goals to pace the Sequim offense as the Wolves (5-2-0 in Olympic League play, 6-3-2 overall) remained in third place in the league standings heading into this week’s action.

Liam Harris added a goal and an assist, Adrian Funston came up from his defensive spot for a goal, freshman Eli Gish notched a goal, and Spanish exchange student Hayuk Minano found the net as well.

“We played pretty well,” Sequim coach Dave Brasher said of the match.

“I think we’re going in the right direction. I think they are starting to understand they are multi-faceted in their attack.”

Brasher credited Evan James as the Wolves’ “man of the match” against the Trojans.

“He had a couple of assists and played well in defense,” Brasher said.

The Sequim coach said he was pleased with how his team played against the cellar-dwelling Trojans.

“It would have been easy to overlook this game,” Brasher said.

“We did a little last year. We beat them handily the first game and then it was a close 2-1 game until the final 10 minutes.

“So it was much better to see the boys stay focused and not let down.”

Sequim dropped a 3-1 decision at Klahowya — the top squad in Olympic League’s 1A division — on April 13, falling to the Kitsap squad on the artificial turf at Silverdale Stadium.

Sequim scored its goal in the 52nd minute to tie the game 1-1. Minano tallied the goal with Harris picking up an assist.

The Eagles, who came into the game with a 7-2-1 mark and having out-scored opponents 33-6, scored a go-ahead goal in the 70th minute and the Wolves were not able to recover.

Klahowya added an insurance goal in the final minutes of the match.

Brasher named Minano as the player of the game for Sequim.
