Boys swimming: Wolves set eight best marks in loss to Kingston

Sequim’s boys swim crew set eight personal best efforts in a 126-38 loss to Olympic League foe Kingston on Jan. 19.

Freshman Jax Thaxton set personal bests in two meets, nearing district meet-qualifying times in both 100 freestyle (59.19) and 200 freestyle (2:14.46) events.

Sequim’s 200 medley and 200 free relay teams — including Sam Frymer, Michael Larsen, Steve Nguyen and James Thayer — also posted new bests. The 200 medley team shed nine seconds off its best, Sequim coach Linda Moats said, thanks in particular to Frymer’s improving backstroke technique.

Frymer swam the 500 free for the first time, finishing in 8:19.

“Sam deserves a lot of credit for this race,” Moats said. “He was able to increase his speed toward the end of the race. That’s difficult to do even for veteran swimmers.”

Liam Payne earned second place in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 individual medley against tough competition, Moats said.

Nguyen dropped seven seconds off his best time in the 100 free (1:23.09).

All three Sequim swimmers in the 50 free — Alex Berikoff, Christian Goodrich and Larsen — improved their personal bests. Berikoff continues to edge closer to a district-qualifying time with a 26.37-second finish. Goodrich cut 0.2 seconds off his best time to 27.71, and Larsen cut a half-second off his 50 free time to 31.70.

The Wolves (0-5) swim against North Kitsap (3-2) in their final home league meet in Sequim on Jan. 26. Sequim competes at the Divisional Invitational in Port Angeles on Jan. 31, the final chance for swimmers to earn district qualifying times.

The West Central District 2A-3A meet is set for Feb. 10-11 at Hazen High School in Renton.
