Boys tennis: Vikings edge Wolves on court

The top team in the Olympic League remains North Kitsap, but Sequim’s Wolves aren’t far behind.

Sequim (6-2) dropped its second loss of the season last week, sandwiched between a pair of 7-0 sweeps of Olympic League foes.

The Wolves, now in second place in the league standings, started the week strong by topping the visiting North Mason Bulldogs 7-0 on Sept. 17.

Raymond Lam and Sam Frymyer picked up wins in No. 1 and 2 singles play, defeating Bulldogs Mason Fisher and Keneth Kesler in straight sets. Thomas Hughes and Blake Wiker, who earned a spot in the state 2A tourney as doubles partners last season, teamed up for the first time in 2018 and earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over North Mason No. 1 doubles team Ryan Crookshank and Jacob Stark. Damon Little and Liam Payne added a win in No. 2 doubles play while Henry Hughes and Dustin Koch won in No. 3 doubles action.

North Mason forfeited their No. 3 singles and No. 4 doubles matches.

On Sept. 19, North Kitsap— the defending league champs — proved to be too deep after sweeping three singles matches and picking up wins in the No. 3 and 4 doubles play. Wiker and Thomas Hughes earned a 6-3, 7-5 win over Vikings Logan Chmeilewski and Jared Resiter at No. 1 doubles, while Little and Payne improved to 5-1 with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Max Larsen and Ryland Schmidt.

Sequim’s Nathan Despain and Ryan Tolberd, who moved up Sequim’s No. 3 doubles position, dropped a three-set match in No. 3 doubles play while Lam lost a tough match to No. 1 Viking singles player Sam Horn (7-5, 6-3).

The Wolves got back in the win column a day later with a 7-0 sweep of Olympic.

Looking ahead

Sequim is at Port Angeles on Sept. 26 and at Klahowya (Silverdale) on Sept. 27 before hosting Chimacum on Oct. 1.
