College basketball: Pirate trio caps season at NWAC all-star games

Their regular seasons ended short of the title game, but a trio of Peninsula Pirates finished their 2016-2017 campaign at the Final Four.

Jenise McKnight and Alicia Dugan represented the Pirate women and Darrion Daniels represented the Pirate men in the Northwest Athletic Conference Sophomore All-Star basketball games at Everett Community College on March 19.

McKnight posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in just 16 minutes of play while Dugan had two points and an assist for the North-East All Stars. The South-West squad, led by Savannah McGill (21 points, 11 rebounds), won the contest 115-82.

In the men’s game, Daniels had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in just 22 minutes of play, but his North-East squad fell to the South-West team in a high-scoring affair, 143-119.

Peninsula’s basketball squads both ended their seasons at the NWAC tourney, falling in the quarterfinals. The Peninsula men (19-9) beat Portland 70-62 on March 9 before falling to Tacoma 75-64 a day later. Peninsula’s women (19-10) knocked off Tacoma 69-61 on March 11 before being eliminated by Umpqua 85-58 on March 12.

Walla Walla topped Tacoma in the men’s championship game, 93-75, while Spokane edged Walla Walla 76-73 in overtime for the women’s crown.
