Cross country: Sequim sweeps league meet in final postseason tune-up

Looking to peak at the right time heading into postseason, Sequim’s Wolves ran away with a pair of league wins last week.

Sequim’s boys emerged with a win in a tight three-way race against host Bremerton and North Mason while Sequim’s girls had a slightly easier time against the Knights and Bulldogs in an Olympic League dual meet on Oct. 10.

SHS freshman Riley Pyeatt topped the field on the 2-mile course at NAD Park in Bremerton in 13:04 — more than a minute faster than runner up Savannah Knutson of North Mason and two minutes faster than the rest of the field — as Sequim’s girls took five of the top eight places.

Sequim’s girls also got top finishes by Jessica German (fourth, 15:16), Eleanor Byrne (fifth, 15:51), Aidyn Shingleton (16:15) and Emily Silva (16:57) as they tallied 23 team points; North Mason had 36 and Bremerton didn’t have enough runners to score team points.

Sequim’s Taylor Coleman was 10th (17:25) and Katelyn Glass was 11th (17:29) to round out the Wolves’ top seven.

On the boys’ side, Murray Bingham continued his strong season in league meets with a first place finish of 11:18 — 10 seconds ahead of North Mason sophomore Naoh Hassenblad — as SHS tallied 32 team points. Bremerton, paced by third-place finisher Enrique Brambila, was second in team scoring with 42 points; North Mason had 49.

Jazen Bartee took fourth for Sequim in 12:15. Teammates Koda Robinson (seventh, 12:16), Fischer Jensen (ninth, 12:50) and Jakob Pyeatt (11th, 12:54) rounded out Sequim’s top five.

The Wolves were without varsity runners Alec Shingleton and Liam Byrne.

Sequim dominated the junior varsity boys race as well, led by Jared Bates’ second place finish (13:07).

Looking ahead

The Wolves compete at the Olympic League championship on Thursday, Oct. 18, in Port Townsend, with top teams and finishers moving on to the Westside Classic district meet set for Oct. 27 at Chamber’s Bay Regional Park in University Place.

The top six teams and 42 individuals from the boys’ district meet, along with the top five teams and 35 individuals at the girls’ district meet, advance to the state 2A meet set for Nov. 3 in Pasco.
