* — Qualifies for district tourney

With four wins in their final four Olympic League games, Sequim’s fastpitch squad went from the postseason bubble to the league’s No. 3 seed headed into the West Central District tournament.

The Wolves (8-4 in league play, 10-9 overall) are seeded ninth at districts and take on fifth-seeded Fife (13-5) from the South Puget Sound League at 12:15 p.m. Friday, May 19, at Tacoma’s Sprinker Fields.

The top six teams from the 12-team double-elimination qualify for the state 2A tournament, held May 26-27 at Carlon Park in Selah.

After a 4-3 win over Olympic to start last week, the Wolves got a tough win against a league foe they may see later at districts, edging North Kitsap 4-1 on May 9.

Sequim scored three runs on four hits in the first inning, with hits from Jordan Bentz, Isabelle Dennis, Shelby Jones and Latisha Robideau.

Dennis shut down the Vikings on the mound, holding the league’s No. 2 seed to districts to just one fifth inning run over seven innings.

Coupeville spoils a party

Looking for a bit of momentum going into the postseason, the Wolves lost to Coupeville 5-3 in their regular home finale on May 10 before dropping a 4-3 decision to Coupeville played immediately after that — a continuation of a May 4 game on Whidbey Island that the teams suspended after two innings because of inclement weather.

Coupeville (17-3), the No. 2 team in the Olympic League’s 1A division, got the scoring starting in the two games in similar fashion, as Mikayla Elfrank blasted a three-run, first-inning home run in both contests. Coupeville then hung on for the wins.

In the first game, Elfrank added a run-scoring double in the third inning for a 4-0 lead before Sequim trimmed the lead to 4-3 in the fourth. Coupeville added an insurance run in the seventh, however, and Coupeville’s Katrina McGranahan tossed a five-hitter for the win.

In the makeup game, Sequim — down 4-0 — scored twice in the fourth inning and once in the sixth but couldn’t complete the comeback.

It was the final game for three Sequim High seniors: third baseman Chloie Sparks, shortstop Jordan Bentz and injured outfielder Adrienne Haggerty.
