Girls basketball: New coach leads Wolves into league fray

New Sequim coach Larry Brown only got one preseason meeting before his Wolves were off and running at their first preseason practice.

Under Brown’s direction, they’ll be doing plenty of running as the season goes on.

“We’re definitely defense-oriented with a shoot-first mentality (on offense),” Brown says. “We will get a lot of shots up.”

The Wolves see just four varsity players back on the court after losing key players Jordan Miller, McKenzie Bentz and Allysen Montelius to graduation, and guard Jordan Bentz to injury.

Anchoring this year’s team are seniors Ella Christiansen and all-Olympic League second-teamer Adrienne Haggerty, whom Brown likes more to forwards than posts.

“I think we’re going to be very strong: We have two senior forwards who are going to be very tough to guard,” Brown says.

Helping fill out the backcourt are junior varsity mainstays Bobbi Sparks, Sarah Shea and Madison Green.

The Wolves also get some fresh legs in freshmen Jessica Dietzman and Hope Glasser.

“Overall, we’re very talented,” Brown says. “I hope we’re going to be in shape.”

Brown has about a dozen years of coaching experience, most recently at Clovis West High School under Tom Orlich, now an assistant at Stanford University.

Brown, who teaches high school math, also coached intermediate level basketball, but it’s his first time coaching a girls team.

Sequim went 2-10 in Olympic League play (sixth) and 6-13 overall last season.

Port Angeles is the defending league champ. Olympic was second and North Kitsap was third in 2015-2016.

The Wolves open the 2016-2017 season at home against Chimacum on Nov. 30, the first of four home games to start the campaign. They host Bremerton on Dec. 7, Olympic on Dec. 9 and North Kitsap on Dec. 13.
