Girls swimming: SHS swimmers taking 12 to districts

With a dozen athletes qualified, Sequim High’s girls swim team officially begins its second season.

Sequim added one more district qualifier — Sydney Swanson made it in the 200 freestyle — at a divisional meet in Port Angeles on Oct. 23, as the team prepares to compete at the West Central District meet, held Nov. 2-3 in Renton.

“That was something (Sydney) had wanted to do all year,” Sequim head coach Bob Pease said.

Pease said the Wolves are taking 12 athletes to the district championships, which kick off with preliminaries at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.

Sonja Govertson is a state qualifier in the 50 and 100 free and 100 butterfly for Sequim and Mia Coffman has state times in the 50 and 500 free. The swim finals start at 4 p.m. on Nov. 3.

The top six placers in each individual district event advance to the state 2A meet in Federal Way, set for Nov. 9-10.

Swimmers and divers also can make state by earning a state-qualifying time or point total or by earning a wild-card slot.

Last fall, Sequim saw two relay teams earn state berth along with Govertsen in the 50 free (fourth place) and 100 free (sixth).
