Girls swimming: Wolves post postseason-qualifying marks in first meets

Just two meets in, Sequim’s Wolves have already extended their season.

Sequim posted a pair of state meet-qualifying times and more than a dozen district meet-qualifying swims as they picked up a tie and a win against two Olympic League foes last week.

The Wolves (1-0-1) battled Olympic to an 83-83 draw on Sept. 11 in Sequim, both teams’ season-openers.

Sonja Govertsen earned a state qualifying time in the 50 free (25.54) and a district qualifier in the 100 free (58.61).

Teammate Mia Coffman also picked up individual wins. A freshman, Coffman won the 200-meter freestyle in 2 minutes, 15.6 seconds, good for a district qualification, and the 500 freestyle in 5:47.2, also good for districts — and only 2.2 seconds off a state qualifying time.

The Sequim 200 freestyle relay team — Sidney Swanson, Morgan Cariou, Heidi Schmitt and Natalie George — won with a time of 2:06.22, earning a spot at the district tourney.

On Sept. 13, Sequim hosted Kingston and swam away with a 113-57 league victory, with all three relay teams posting district meet qualifying times.

Govertsen posted her second state-qualifier in as many meets with a 100 butterfly time of 1:03.70.

Teammate Jasmine Itti posted a pair of district qualifying times, in both the 50 free (26.75) and 100 breast (1:23.60). Coffman had two district qualifying times, in the 100 free (58.80) and 200 IM (2:29.10). Other district qualifiers included Govertsen in the 100 back (1:08.71) and Sydney Swanson in the 200 IM (2:39.50).

Sequim’s 200 medley relay team (Coffman, Swanson, Govertsen, Itti) swam to a 2:02.50 finish — just a half-second off a state 2A meet qualifying pace. The Wolves’ 200 free relay team (Govertsen, Swanson, Itti, Coffman) is similarly a half-second off the state 2A meet standard after posting a 1:49 finish against Kingston.
