Girls Tennis: Doubles team, D’Amico and Dietzman, advance to districts

One Sequim doubles team travels to Bremerton’s tennis courts again this week for a chance to play at the 2A state tournament.

Senior Hannah D’Amico and freshman Jessica Dietzman earned a fourth place and the final doubles seed at the Olympic League Meet on May 10-11 at the Kitsap Tennis &Athletic Center where they’ll play on May 17-18 too for the West Central Districts III 2A Tennis Championships.

Sequim singles players Izzy Hugoniot and Stephanie LaCour will serve as alternates with only the top four finishes in singles and doubles automatically qualifying for districts.

D’Amico and Dietzman won their first two match-ups going 6-2, 6-3 over Mackenzie Atkins and Taylor Sanville of Kingston and 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2 over Miranda Castillo and Skylar Schmidt of North Kitsap. The Sequim duo lost their next match-up 6-2, 6-4 to first-place finishers Lily Beaulieu and Emily Shaeleen of Kingston.

In the consolation, D’Amico and Dietzman won 6-5, 7-5 over Karli Taylor and Kaylani Riley of Olympic but in the third- and fourth-place match-up, Sequim’s pair lost a coin flip giving Sydney Troy and Brooklyn Haro of Olympic third place.

Sequim’s other doubles teams of Ella Christiansen and Teà Gauthun and Amanda He and Elizabeth Rosales both went 1-2 winning their first matches in the consolation bracket.

Hugoniot won her first match 6-2, 6-0 over Port Angeles’ Audrey Little but lost her second match 6-2, 6-1 to second-place finisher Jasmine Palaganas of Bremerton. In the consolation, Hugoniot won two matches in a row 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2 before losing to Makinna Skjonsby of North Mason.

This setup a fifth-/sixth-place match-up with LaCour, who opened her tournament with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Bremerton’s Emily Nguyen.

LaCour lost in the next round to Skjonsby 6-3, 6-0, setting up a match-up with teammate Katey Wake in a loser-out match in the consolation. Wake had just defeated Emma Collins of Bremerton but LaCour won 6-4, 6-1 over Wake. LaCour then defeated Little of Port Angeles 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 but lost to third-place finisher Chiara Droell of Olympic 6-2, 6-2.

Hugoniot won fifth place in a rock, paper, scissors competition over LaCour.

As a team, the Wolves finished their regular season in third place at 9-4 in the Olympic League and overall after their final match against Chimacum on May 1 was postponed indefinitely due to weather.
