In a match that all but locked up the Olympic League title, Sequim got clutch wins in both singles and doubles play to — for the second time this season — knock off defending 2A champ North Kitsap on April 23.

“I think we surprised even ourselves,” Sequim coach Mark Textor said. “They (NK) are a good team; when you beat them, you’ve accomplished something.”

The Wolves dropped just one match while sweeping all four doubles match-ups and two singles matches.

In No. 1 doubles play, Sequim’s formidable duo of Jessica Dietzman and Kalli Wiker edged Vikings Karly Rojas and Noey Barreith 6-4, 6-3, while McKenna Hastings and Ashley Rosales knocked off NK’s Grace Hansen and Jamison Jacobsen 6-1, 6-3 in the next court.

Sequim’s Amanda He and Arlene Law won a third set tiebreaker to top Rachael Griffel and Jessica Raper 6-3, 0-6, 10-4, while SHS’s Emily Bundy and Melissa Porter had a relatively easier time in No. 4 doubles play (6-2, 6-1 over Poppie Jacobsen and Hannah Knott).

In singles play, Isabelle Hugoniot topped Geneva Newell 6-0 in the first set and came back from an early deficit in the second to win that 6-3. Sequim’s Eden Johnson topped NK’s Grace Coleman in No. 3 singles play, 6-1, 6-2.

In Sequim’s lone loss against North Kitsap, sophomore Olivia Preston pressed NK’s Emma Harper before falling in straight sets, 7-6 (7-3) and 6-2.

Textor had high praise for Johnson, a junior.

“(She) has been super solid all season,” the Sequim coach said.

“Another has been Melissa Porter. She has steadily improved and made us tough at No. 3 singles and doubles. I don’t think we have a weakness in our lineup.”

Sequim added a home win in the wind on April 26, with the Wolves making quick work of the struggling Knights. Wiker, Dietzman and Johnson each won their singles matches without losing a point, as did He and Law in No. 2 doubles and Porter and Preston in No. 3 doubles. Hastings and Rosales won in No. 1 doubles play while Chloe Goldate and Kayli Prorok won at No. 4 doubles, both in straight sets.

Sequim added a 5-2 home win against a formidable Olympic Trojan squad on April 29; full details were unavailable at press time.

Looking ahead

The Wolves close out the regular season on May 1 at North Mason.

Top singles and doubles teams battle for district tourney berths at the Olympic League tournament in Bremerton, set for May 10-11.

The West Central District 2A tournament is May 17-18, also in Bremerton.
