Golf: McMenamin takes sixth, Wolves place fifth at state tourney

With athletes at each prep grade level, Sequim High golfers made a big impact at the state 2A golf tourney.

Behind solid play of upperclassmen, Sequim’s girls placed fifth at the 2A tournament and now back-to-back top-five team finishes at state for the first time.

SHS senior Alex McMenamin, named the Olympic League MVP for the fourth time in four years, was seventh after the first round and wound up sixth overall, shooting rounds of 80 and 81.

After a rough first round (96) in which she nearly missed the cut, junior Sarah Shea bounced back with a solid round of 82 on the second day and finished 22nd.

Sequim’s boys saw three of their four golfers — all underclassmen — make the second day cut and earn a tie for ninth place as a team.

Sophomore Blake Wiker, league MVP and district champion, tied with teammate Andrew Vanderberg for 26th place overall. Wiker shot rounds of 82 and 81, while Vanderberg — a freshman — shot 84 and 79.

Sequim freshman Paul Jacobsen shot a 168 (83-85) for 37th place.

Junior Josiah Carter narrowly missed the first day cut after a round of 89. He tied for 58th place overall.

Liberty (Issaquah) won the boys 2A tourney, with Olympic (eighth place) as the top Olympic League team.

East Valley (Yakima) edged Liberty for the 2A girls title, with Olympic taking fourth.
