Golf: Sequim High squads seek top finishes at state

Looking for all fairways and greens, Sequim High’s golf squads are in Richland this week battling for top spots in the class 2A state boys and girls tournaments.

Sequim’s undefeated boys squad has a quartet of golfers seeking to improve on their ninth-place finish in 2017. They were scheduled to tee it up on Tuesday, May 22, at Columbia Point Golf Course, with about half of the 80-player field advancing to play the second day.

Sequim teammates Andrew Vanderberg and Blake Wiker tied for 26th at last year’s state 2A final, while Paul Jacobsen, this year’s Olympic League tourney champ, placed 37th and Josiah Carter tied for 58th.

Also undefeated this spring, Sequim’s girls have three players — league champ Sarah Shea, top district qualifier Samantha Smith and Maddie Uranga, teeing it up this week at Horn Rapids Golf Course.

Despite missing a chance to qualify for state at the district tourney last week, Uranga was added to the state roster. Officials with the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association noted she should have been added after her sixth place finish in the league tourney, Sequim coach Garrett Smithson said this week.

Last spring, Shea placed 22nd and Smith tied for 44th as the Wolves — with sixth-place finisher Alex McMenamin — placed fifth as a team.

Both of Sequim’s prep golf squads went 9-0 to earn Olympic League championships this spring.
