Golf: Sequim squads sweep Chimacum, NK

Sequim’s boys and girls golf squads continue to be no match for Olympic League foes on the links.

The squads swept Chimacum on March 20 and North Kitsap on March 21, as both teams improved to 4-0 in league and overall.

Taking on Chimacum at the Port Ludlow Golf Course on March 20, Paul Jacobsen led the way for Sequim’s boys with a 39 while teammates Blake Wiker (44) and Josiah Carter (45) placed second and third, respectively, as the Wolves won 176-214 (low score wins).

“The course layout proved to be very challenging for all players as every stoke average went up,” Sequim boys team coach Bill Shea said.

Despite never having played the course, Sequim’s girls dominated Chimacum, 218-272. Sequim’s Sarah Shea was medalist with a back-nine round of 45, with teammate Samantha Smith second (53) and Yana Hoesel third (58).

“This was our first trip away from home which showed a little in our scores,” Sequim girls team coach Garrett Smithson said.

On March 21, Sequim’s girls played what Smithson called a “challenging” front nine holes at Whitehorse Golf Club, and came away with a 209-241 win over host North Kitsap.

Shea led the way once again with a 40 and Smith was second with a 50. Rebecca Bray of North Kitsap was third with a 53.

“Overall I was happy with play of all the girls — considering Whitehorse is far and away the toughest course we will play all year,” Smithson said.

Sequim’s boys made it a clean sweep with a 160-241 victory. Wiker was the medalist with a round of 37, followed by Jacobsen (39), Andrew Vanderberg (41) and Liam Payne (43).

Sequim’s squads are off for spring break and return to action on Tuesday, April 10, when they host the Olympic Trojans.
