NK tops Sequim in Wolves’ home league meet

The Vikings won this clash of purple-and-gold, but Sequim’s and North Kitsap’s squads will see plenty more of each other in coming weeks at postseason meets.

A deep and talented NK boys squad handed the Wolves their first league loss on the track this season, scoring 105 team points to Sequim’s 69 on April 18, the Wolves’ lone home meet of the season.

Olympic was third (59.5 points) and Coupeville was fourth (30.5).

North Kitsap also dominated on the girls’ side, tallying 117 team points to sweep Olympic (58), Coupeville (52) and Sequim (40).

Sequim’s Murray Bingham outlasted NK’s David Blalock in the 1,600 meters with a 4:47 mark for first place, and added a win in the 3,200 meters in 10:28.

Riley Martin cruised to a win in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.39 seconds, one of the top marks in Washington state this spring, and set a personal best in the 300 hurdles in 41.19 seconds, finishing a hair behind Olympic’s Darrelle White (41.11); White and Martin have the fifth- and sixth-best marks in the state, according to athletic.net.

Martin’s teammate Fischer Jensen finished third in both hurdles events, setting personal bests in the 110 (16.68 seconds) and 300 (42.85).

Sequim’s Alec Shingleton raced to a win in the 400 meters (52.84 seconds, a personal record he would break three days later; see below) and teammate Riley Cowan topped the field in the javelin with a 159-foot 1-inch heave.

Liam Byrne set a season-best mark (and matching a personal best) in the pole vault of 12 feet, good for first place.

Darren Salazar placed second in the 200-meter race in a personal-best 23.89 seconds, and third in the 100-meter sprint (11.66).

SHS track newcomer Payton Glasser was second in the discus with a 124-9 mark, just three inches short of event winner Jameson Moore of North Kitsap.

Sequim’s 4×400 relay placed second to North Kitsap, with Martin, Salazar, Shingleton and Logan Laxson finishing in 3:42.51.

On the girls’ side, Elizabeth Sweet topped 10 feet in the pole vault for the second time this season to take first; teammates Hannah Lewis and Kiana Miller both topped 7 feet for fourth place. Sweet also placed third in the triple jump (28-8.25).

Sequim teammate Kaitlin Viada won the javelin with a 92-foot 1-inch throw.

Shayli Schuman took second in the 100 hurdles with a personal best 16.72-second effort, and Kristinna Barnet raced to second place in the 400 meters (1:08.13)

Telicia Busby was third in the 200 meters (29.94) and fourth in the 100 meters (13.79).

Lindsey Leader set a personal best in the discus with an 83-3 mark, good for fourth place, and also took fourth in the shot put (27-10.5).

Gabby Happe tied for third place in the high jump (4-2), fourth in the long jump (13-3.25) and was fifth in the 800 meters (2:51), each setting a personal best mark.

Wolves at Lil’ Norway

Sequim’s boys placed fourth out of 17 teams while the SHS girls were 12th out of 21 teams at the Lil’ Norway Invitational in Poulsbo on April 21.

Earning first-place finishes for the Wolves were Riley Martin in the 110 hurdles (15.48), Fischer Jensen in the 100 hurdles (43.03), Riley Cowan in the javelin (145-04) and Elizabeth Sweet in the pole vault (10-0).

On the boys’ side, Murray Bingham placed second in a competitive 1,600-meter race (4:29) and fifth in the 800 meter event (2:04), while Alec Shingleton was third at 400 meters (52.76). Jensen was fourth in the 110 hurdles (17.05). Liam Byrne took second in the boy’s pole vault (11-0). Sequim’s boys 4×400 was second with a 3:38.55 mark, two seconds behind Central Kitsap.

For Sequim’s girls, Daisy Ryan was fifth in the 200 meters with a personal-best 28.51 and Shayli Schuman took fifth in the 100 hurdles (16.78). Kianna Miller was sixth in the pole vault, clearing a persona record 7 feet.

Ryan, Kristinna Barnet, Telicia Busby and Mary McAleer raced to a fourth place finish in the sprint relay medley (100, 100, 200 and 400 meters).

Central Kitsap won the Lil’ Norway boys title with 117 points, followed by host North Kitsap (106.5) and Sequim.

Port Angeles (118.5 team points) won the girls’ title, followed by North Kitsap (103), Central Kitsap (94.5) and Charles Wright Academy (68), a 1A school.

Looking ahead

Sequim is at Port Angeles on April 26 to take on Port Townsend, Coupeville and the host Roughriders.

The Wolves get their final postseason prep against some tough competition at the Shelton Invitational on April 28.

Sequim’s tracksters take on league foes at the Olympic League meet on May 5 at North Kitsap High School in Poulsbo; the league’s junior varsity meet is May 7 in Kingston.

The league’s sub-district meet is set for May 12 in Bremerton, with top athletes advancing to the West Central District meet set for May 18-19 in Renton.

This year’s state 2A meet is slated for May 24-26 in Tacoma.
