The Wolves are streaking, but not quite the same way that propelled them into the class 2A state playoffs last season.

A pair of losses to Olympic League 3A powerhouses has Sequim’s girls mired in a six-game funk dating back to December, their last win coming against non-league foe South Whidbey.

Despite the poor turn of fate, the Wolves (3-6 in league, 4-9 overall) are just one game behind North Mason’s Bulldogs for second place among 2A teams, three-and-a-half games back of front-running Kingston heading into a Jan. 22 match-up with league doormat Klahowya.

Against Olympic on Friday night, the Trojans jumped to a 22-14 lead after one quarter and 38-26 halftime lead before the Wolves trimmed the lead in the third quarter.

Nicole Buhl had eight points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to lead the Trojans, who were slated to challenge Port Angeles Jan. 22 for sole possession of first place in the Olympic League.

Sarah Moores led the Wolves with 13 points while Laine Briggs and Yolanda Chinn had 11 points each, but the Wolves weren’t able to overcome the early deficit.

Seahawks pull away late for league win

How sweep it is for the Seahawks from Gig Harbor.

Peninsula High’s girls made it a clean sweep of the two-game series with Sequim after a 59-51 Olympic League victory on Jan. 15.

Taylor Helwig had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Peninsula while teammate Kayla Erickson had six blocks to go with nine points.

Moores once again led Sequim in scoring, pouring in 16 points.

The Wolves held a one-point halftime lead and were tied with the Seahawks before Peninsula closed the game with a 20-12 scoring run.

Briggs added 11 points while Lynzie Joslin scored eight and Chinn chipped in with seven.
