Prep golf: Sequim boys improve to 8-0, girls to 7-1

Sequim’s golf squads earned a pair of Olympic League wins last week, with the Wolves’ boys improving to a league-leading 8-0 on the season and SHS’s girls to 7-1, just behind undefeated Olympic.

Junior Sarah Shea shot a personal-best 35, 1-under through nine holes, to edge teammate Alex McMenamin for medalist honors as SHS’s girls knocked off Chimacum 177-270 (low score wins) at The Cedars at Dungeness on April 18.

Samantha Smith shot a 48, Maddie Witherow a 58, Angela Carrillo-Burge a 59 and Cristina Hoesel a 60 to round out Sequim’s varsity crew.

Sequim’s girls added a 194-265 victory two days later at Port Townsend.

The Wolves’ boys, who haven’t lost a league match since April 9, 2015, improved their winning streak to 23 matches with a sweep of Jefferson County foes last week.

On April 18, Blake Wiker and Andrew Vanderberg had rounds of 72 as the Wolves topped Chimacum 304-419 at The Cedars.

Paul Jacobsen of Sequim had the third-best round with 78. Sequim’s Josiah Carter had an 82 while teammates Liam Payne and Jarrett Allen both had 86s.

On April 20, Jacobsen led the way for Sequim with a nine-hole score of 37 as Sequim topped Port Townsend 164-218.

Vanderberg shot a 39 for second place and Wiker was third with a 43.

The victory clinched Sequim’s second consecutive league title.

Looking ahead

SHS’s teams were slated to play at North Mason on April 25.

Sequim’s boys look to defend their title at the 51st Tim Higgins Memorial at Kitsap Golf &Country Club on April 27.

The Wolves look to place players into the state tournament or West Central District tourney when Sequim hosts the Olympic League championships on May 2.

The district tournament is slated for May 16 at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton.

The 2A state tournaments are set for May 23-24 in Spokane; boys play at Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, the girls at Indian Canyon Golf Course.
