Runners, walkers take to Troll Haven

Despite a smaller crowd than hoped for, organizers of the 2017 Valley of the Trolls half-marathon, 10k and 5k races on Aug. 19 said they were pleased with the day’s festivities.

“It was a fun crowd; everyone said they are coming back next year,” race co-organizer Jane Storm said.

Hosted at Bandy Farms’ Troll Haven, the trio of competitions saw 233 participants make it to the finish line.

Storm said there were several no-shows but “other than that, it went off well.”

Her highlight was seeing 6-year-old Titus Fordham and father Tyler of Nordland cross the finish line in the 5k. Titus suffers from adrenoleukodystrophy, a rare genetic disease, and organizers of the 2015 Valley of the Trolls Spooktacular fun run dedicated that race — and funds — to him and his family.

“He said, ‘It was hard but I could do it and I did,’” Storm said. “He’s just a neat little kid.”

As a twist to this year’s races, organizers hosted a participant competition between Olympic Peninsula communities, with funds going to that community’s prep running team. Storm said they will announce the winner of the competition at a later date.

Rick Becker of Selah, 62, won the half-marathon in 1:26:16, about nine minutes ahead of runner-up Eric Ellofson of Sequim (1:35:31).

Stacy Ballard of Des Moines won the half-marathon women’s division, in 1:54:16, with Staci Suneson of Olympic taking second about one minute behind.

Carla Spady was Sequim’s top half marathon female finisher, placing 16th overall with a 2:18:12 finish.

John Altemose, 50, of Port Townsend, won the 10k with a 44:46 finish, edging Troy Taylor of Sequim by 18 seconds.

Margaret Scott of Portland, Ore., was third and first among females (49:02). Holly Bunker was Sequim’s top female finisher, crossing the line in 54:18.

Sequim swept top honors in the 5k race. Charles Logan, 13, of Sequim, took first in the 5k race with a 24:08 finish. Dominic Broderson of Port Hadlock was second (26:41) and Sequim’s Colby Ellofson (28:38) was third.

In the female division, Sequim’s Sheila Fordrung topped the field with a 32:32 mark; Jessie Stratton of Redding, Calif., was second, four seconds back.
