Sequim gyamnsts end season at state meet

Sequim and Port Angeles gymnasts ended their season at the state prep pinnacle.

Sequim sophomore Elizabeth Sweet and freshman Lesae Pfeffer both posted personal best scores on the floor exercise while PA’s Roughriders took sixth place as a team at the WIAA Washington State Gymnastics 1A/2A/3A meet, held Feb. 16-17 in Tacoma.

Sweet scored 8.325 points while Pfeffer scored a 7.625 on the floor to cap their respective seasons.

Without a full SHS team, the Sequim duo competed with Port Angeles’ team this season. The Roughriders made good on their goal to improve at the state level after placing eighth in 2015 and seventh last season.

The state meet saw eight teams and 96 individuals in each event competing for top honors.

“Our goals heading into the state meet were to finish the team competition in sixth place … and to advance an athlete into finals on Friday. Our team achieved both,” PA assistant coach Jackie Mangano said.

“This is quite an accomplishment for our team considering the immense stress and pressure of the state meet environment.”
