SHS relay earns district-qualifying time in opener

One meet into the season and the Wolves have extended theirs.

In their first meet of the 2016-2017 season, Sequim’s boys swimming squad earned a district meet-qualifying time in their first event — the 200 medley relay — in a 105-60 loss at Bremerton on Dec. 15.

Jax Thaxton, Liam Payne, Christian Good-rich and Alex Berikoff edged the Knights’ top team for a 2:07 finish, earning first place and a district berth by nearly three seconds.

The Sequim quartet nearly did the same in the 200 free relay later on in the meet, closing in on a district meet time with a 1:53.08 finish for the fastest time of the meet.

Also earning first-place swims were Good-rich in the 200 freestyle (2:45.62), Thaxton in the 100 free (59.43, just 0.9 seconds off a district qualifying time) and Payne in the 100 breaststroke (1:21, a three-second personal best).

Payne also trimmed four seconds off his personal best in the 200 IM (2:47.45) to take second place. Good-rich took second in the 100 butterfly, cutting his personal best by three seconds to 1:19.65.

Thaxton was second in the 100 backstroke with a 1:13.15 — about 1.3 seconds off a district qualifying time — while Berikoff improved his 100 back time by 10 seconds to 1:21.28, placing third.

Sam Frymer improved both 50 free and 100 free times from time trials earlier in the week. His 100 time was particularly impressive, Sequim coach Linda Moats said, considering he was ill coming into the meet.

Moats said she also was impressed with newcomer Michael Larsen’s 1:31.12 mark in the 100 backstroke.

Looking ahead

The Wolves are off for winter break until Jan. 4-5, when they host back-to-back meets.

Sequim hosts Klahowya on Jan. 4 in a makeup meet that was originally slated for Dec. 8. The Wolves then host Olympic on Jan. 5.

Sequim swims at Port Angeles on Jan. 12 and at the Swimvitational in Silverdale on Jan. 14.
