Millimans compete at state

Father-son duo Chuck and Phillip Milliman earned plenty of gold at the Washington State Senior Games on July 22 in Olympia.

Competing in the 85-89 age division, Chuck Milliman was the only competitor in four field events and won gold. He cleared 6 feet in the pole vault and tallied an 8-2 mark in the long jump, a 4-9 mark in the standing long jump and a 3-5 mark in the high jump.

He finished second in both 50-meter race (10.50 seconds) and the 100-meter race (23.26 seconds), both times to Donald B. Kane of North Plains, Ore.

In the 65-69 division, Phillip Milliman topped a field of five in the high jump with a 4-foot 7-inch mark.

He also took home gold after clearing 10 feet in the pole vault as the lone competitor in his age group.

Softball champs named

A quartet of teams are celebrating 2017 Port Angeles Parks &Recreation men’s and women’s softball league titles after winning their respective tournaments in July.

Shirley’s Cafe took home the Women’s Division while Moose Lodge Bulls took top honors in the Men’s Gold Division.

Kaboom Salon share the Men’s Silver Division title with Evergreen Collision.

Registration open for Quilcene half marathon, 10k, 5k runs

Registration is open for the 2017 Quilcene Oyster Half Marathon, 10k and 5k races set for Sunday, Sept. 17. Early bird registration fees are: $30 for 5k, $40 for 10k and $55 for the half marathon ($5 less for students 18 and younger with ID or active military personnel).

Fees go up another $5 for day-of-race registration.

Online registration closes Sept. 10. Proceeds benefit the local nonprofit organizations Quilcene/Brinnon Dollars for Scholars and Count Me In For Quilcene. Register and find more information at quilcenehalfmarathon.com.

Grubb, Basden earn all-state spots

James Grubb of Sequim and Port Angeles’ Ben Basden were named to the Washington State Baseball Coaches’ Association Class 2A All-State team.

Grubb, an All-Peninsula team selection by coaches and the Peninsula Daily News, hit .432 for Sequim this season with 33 RBIs and a team-high 19 stolen bases. The All-Olympic League first team outfielder also went 2-1 with a 4.20 ERA on the mound for the Wolves.

Basden hit .319 for the state-bound Roughriders, with 10 RBIs, 11 runs and seven stolen bases. He was a first-team All-Olympic League 2A Division pick at second base.

Valley of the Trolls runs set

Registration is underway for the third annual Valley of the Trolls, an event featuring a half marathon, 10-kilometer and 5k races, that will be held Saturday, Aug. 19.

The event is held at Troll Haven Bandy Farms, a troll-themed property at 950 Gardiner Beach Road, beginning at 8 a.m. Race organizers are challenging the citizens of Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend and Chimacum to compete.

The town with the most runners will have a donation made to the town’s high school track and field program.

All finishers receive a T-shirt and medal.
