Coed softball league set

Port Angeles Parks & Recreation hosts a coed softball league this summer, with the season running from July 23-Aug. 30. The league, open to men and women of ages 18 and older, costs $650 per team; individuals may sign up and get on a “free agent” list. Games are played at Shane Park.

SHS’s Shea, Jacobsen hit links

Sarah Shea, the Olympic League and All-Peninsula Team girls golf MVP, tied for 26th at the Washington State Golf Association’s Women’s Amateur at Lake Spanaway Golf Course, held June 26-28.

Olivia Benzin of Tacoma took top honors at the WSGA Women’s Amateur with a 2-over-par 218, with Auburn’s Jamie Huo four shots back and Brittany Kwon five shots back.

She shot a 254 over the three days, shooting 87, 86 and 81 in the 33-player field.

Shea, a 2018 Sequim High graduate, will play for Western Washington University starting this fall.

Sequim’s Paul Jacobsen — this year’s boys Olympic League and All-Peninsula Team MVP — tried his luck at qualifying for the U.S. Junior Amateur in a qualifier event held on the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain on June 20. He finished 20 shots behind Snoqualmie’s Drew Warford, who shot a 2-under-par 70 and won by one stroke.

Sequim High shines on All-Peninsula golf teams

Sequim High sophomore Paul Jacobsen has some company on the All-Peninsula Boys Golf Team.

A trio of Wolves joined Jacobsen, the Olympic League MVP, on the All-Peninsula Team as voted on by area coaches and the sports staff of the Peninsula Daily News.

Junior Blake Wiker trimmed a stroke off his sophomore scores with a 37.71 scoring average, placed second at Olympic League Tournament and finished 10th to lead the Wolves to second palce at the state 2A tourney.

Sophomore Andrew Vanderberg posted a 38.67 average this spring, was third at the Olympic League tourney and finished 25th at state.

Senior Josiah Carter had the sixth-best Olympic League 2A scoring average of 41 and qualified for second consecutive state golf tournament.

Others on the golf squad include Port Angeles junior Mathew Locke, Port Townsend sophomore Jacob Madison and Chimacum senior Logan Storm.

Sequim’s Harris (MVP), SHS teammates get honors

A record-setting season saw Liam Harris and teammates on the Sequim High boys soccer squad get more kudos.

Harris, a 2018 Sequim High graduate, was named MVP of the All-Peninsula Boys Soccer Team last week as voted on by area coaches and the sports staff of the Peninsula Daily News.

Harris finished his senior season with 16 goals and 12 assists and was selected as the Olympic League’s MVP while also breaking all-time school career records in both offensive categories with 45 goals and 27 assists, as Sequim finished second in the Olympic League and advanced to the state quarterfinals.

Joining him on the team were teammates Mathew Craig (senior), Hayuk Minano (senior), Ryan Tolberd (sophomore) and Sean Weber (junior). Tolberd shattered Sequim’s single-season goal-scoring mark with 21 goals while Minano, an exchange student, set new single-season assist mark for Sequim with 16 and also scored 13 goals. Craig and Weber were named to the all-Olympic League second team.

Sequim coach Dave Brasher shared the All-Peninsula Team Coach of the Year honors with Forks’ Joe Morton.

Dennis, Jones, Julmist selected for All-Peninsula team

Three Sequim High softball standouts were named to the All-Peninsula Softball Team last week, as voted on by area coaches and the sports staff of the Peninsula Daily News.

Senior pitcher Shelby Jones, junior infielder Isabelle Dennis and freshman outfielder Jayla Julmist were named to the team, helping lead the Wolves to a West Central District playoff appearance.

Junior Bobbi Sparks and sophomore Brianna Dominguez, both infielders, were named honorable mentions.

Port Angeles second baseman Natalie Steinman was named the All-Peninsula MVP after hitting .700 and helping the Roughrider advance to state for the sixth consecutive season.
