Aughtry takes fifth at national long drive competition

Sequim golfer Scott Aughtry placed fifth overall with a best drive of 321 yards at the 2018 The ParaLong Drive Cup, held March 7-8 at the Mesquite Sports & Event Complex in Mesquite, Nev.

The event brings the top golfers with disabilities from across the country to compete for the top prize; this year’s winner was Mike Gays, a golfer/below-knee amputee, who took top honors with a 358-yard drive.

Aughtry is one of the nation’s top blind golfers.

North of Falcon meeting slated

The Puget Sound Anglers-North Olympic Peninsula Chapter sponsor the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) North of Falcon meeting from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., in lieu of their regular meeting. This is the annual meeting held by WDFW to discuss with the public the data regarding salmon season setting for the upcoming year. Interested parties are encouraged to come and let one’s voice be heard. Biologists will be on hand to answer questions.

Sure shot at The Cedars

Jan Clendening of Sequim sank her first hole-in-one on March 3 at The Cedars at Dungeness. Clendening aced the 120-yard hole No. 17 at The Cedars. Richard Barhams, Mike Clendening and Richard Clendening, each from Sequim, witnessed the feat.

Women’s basketball league forming in PA

The Port Angeles Parks & Recreation Department hosts a spring women’s basketball league open to women/girls ages 16 and older. Games are held at Roosevelt Elementary School and the Vern Burton Community Center.

Cost is $400 per team. The registration deadline is March 22. Players without a team can register and are put on a “free agent”list.

Fly Fishers to meet March 20

The next meeting of the Sequim Greywolf Fly Fishers is from 7-9p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at the Masonic Lodge, 700 S. Fifth Ave, Sequim. There will be a brief business meeting, followed by fishing reports on local lakes and favorite flies that successfully catch fish.

The remainder of the meeting is reserved for individual fly tying. Attendees may tie a fly of your choice (bring fly-tying equipment and materials) or observe this month’s tying event. There will also be a fly raffle and discussion about recent adventures.

The club’s 2018 annual dues are due: single fishers are $20 and family fishers are $30.

Soccer academy set

Registration for the Peninsula Soccer Academy is underway at www.paysc.com through March 31.

The spring soccer program for U6-U17 players is presented by Port Angeles Youth Soccer Club and Peninsula College. It is designed for players interested in enhancing their soccer skills and knowledge in a non-competitive environment.

Coaching is conducted by Peninsula College soccer coaches and players, with all sessions at Peninsula College, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Sessions for U6 and U7 players will be held from 5:45-6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from April 17-May 22. Cost is $45 for U6 and U7 players.

Practices for U8-U11 athletes will run from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays from April 9-May 31.

And U12-U17 players will train from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from April 9-May 31.

Cost is $70 for U8 through U17 players.
