Anderson selected NWAC Coach of Year

Kanyon Anderson, the winningest coach in the history of Northwest Athletic Conference women’s soccer, was named 2018 NWAC Coach of the Year last week.

It is the third time Anderson, who last November won his fourth NWAC championship, has been named NWAC Coach of the Year (he won the award in 2011 and 2016).

Anderson was hired to launch women’s soccer at Peninsula College in 2010, and since placing second in the league that year, he’s won a league title each year since. PC’s women went on to win NWAC titles in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2018.

Torres-Benito signs on at Sac State

Peninsula College sophomore Shantel Torres-Benito signed a national letter of intent last week to continue her soccer career with the Division I Sacramento State Hornets.

The forward out of Waipahu, Hawaii, joins the Hornet women’s soccer team in the fall. Sacramento State plays in the Big Sky Conference.

“Shantel has been a great player for us for two years,” Peninsula head coach Kanyon Anderson said. “She is very fast and dangerous on the ball, but her defending is what makes her even more valuable in my opinion. Her intelligence and work rate on the defensive side of the ball are huge reasons why we were able to win tough games in the playoffs.”

Anglers can keep two

Thanks to some healthy numbers, local and visiting anglers can keep two salmon daily in Marine Area 6, the east Juan de Fuca Strait area.

State officials made the rule change last week after seeing preliminary estimates that indicate anglers have harvested 34 percent of the winter season hatchery chinook salmon through March 10.

The rule change went into effect March 15.

For more information, anglers should consult the 2018-2019 Washington Sports Fishing Rules pamphlet, available online at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations. Anglers can check state website at wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/reports_plants.html for the latest information on marine areas that are managed to a quota or guideline.
