Sequim gymnast takes fourth at state meet

Alex Schmadeke, an eighth-grader at Sequim Middle School, took fourth place in all-around scoring in the Senior B division at the 2018 Washington Optional State Championships, held at the Auburn Gymnastics Center on March 16.

Schmadeke, who competes with Twisters Gymnastics based in Port Hadlock, took second place on beam (9.500), fourth on bars (9.350), eighth on vault (9.275) and ninth on floor (9.350) for 37.475 points.

Breckenridge sets school discus mark

Megan Breckenridge, a 2016 Sequim High School graduate, plays volleyball for The Evergreen State College’s Geoducks in the fall and winter — but she’s now the school’s record holder in the discus.

Not bad for her first track and field meet at any level.

Breckenridge’s effort — 87 feet, 4 inches — placed her 22nd at the Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open in Portland, Ore., on March 17.
