Boater meeting, dinner slated

The North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron will meet at the Sunland Golf and Country Club, 109 Hilltop Dr., on Monday, May 14. The speaker for the evening is Cdr. Dick Schoel, U.S. Coast Guard (Ret.). Schoel was Chief of the Office for Search and Rescue in Juneau, Alaska, in 1980, when what has been called the greatest high seas rescue in the history of the Coast Guard took place. The luxury cruise liner Prinsendam caught fire and eventually sank; Schoel took charge of coordinating the air and sea rescue operation that saved more than 520 lives.

Social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by a short business meeting, dinner and the speaker. The event is free and open to the public; a dinner can be purchased for $22 per person.
