Track & Field: Sequim boys place fourth, girls 10th at league championships

Sequim’s Wolves saw mixed results at the Olympic League Championships on May 6 in Poulsbo.

With several top performances, Sequim’s boys took fourth place in the 11-team meet, while a reduced roster saw Sequim’s girls place 10th overall.

Sophomore Murray Bingham swept the 800- and 1,600-meter events, racing to a personal-best 2:03 in the former.

Fellow soph Riley Martin set personal bests in both of his events as well, winning the 300-meter hurdles in 42.31 and taking second behind North Kitsap senior Nathanael Kjormoe in 110-meter high hurdles with a 16.09 mark.

Riley Cowan, another sophomore, won the javelin with a 156-foot, 3-inch throw to edge Chimacum’s Chris Sevilla by less than three feet.

Curtis Gorr took second in the 200-meter race (23.23) and Liam Byrne was fourth in the pole vault with a personal-best 11-6 effort.

On the girls’ side, senior Hilary Holtrop and freshman Lindsey Leader each took third-place finishes in their events. Holtrop cleared 4-8 in the high jump while Leader set a personal best with a 31-1.5 throw in the shot put. Clarisse Finman placed fourth in the discus with a 94-3 mark.

The Wolves were without several top athletes on the girls’ side, including 2016 state qualifier Elizabeth Sweet (pole vault) and distance stalwart Morgan Bingham.

North Kitsap won both team league titles, with NK’s boys (718 points) easily topping runner-up Port Townsend (249), Bremerton (237), Sequim (228) and seen other squads. The Viking girls tallied 539 points, with Port Angeles (348) in second and Olympic (320) taking third.

Olympic’s girls set a pair of league meet records, in both 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Looking ahead

The Wolves compete at a sub-district meet Saturday, May 13, in Bremerton, with top athletes advancing to the May 19-20 West Central District meet in Renton.

The top 2A boys and girls vie for titles and spots on the medal stand at the class 2A state track and field meet May 25-27 at Mount Tahoma High School in Tacoma.

Last year, Sequim’s boys placed 17th and SHS’s girls tied for 19th out of more than 40 teams with state entries, earning eight individual top-10 finishes.
