Track & Field: Sequim boys sweep Bucs, Eagles in first league meet

Sequim’s boys passed their first Olympic League test with proverbial flying colors.

The Wovles took first in 11 of 17 events and added nine second-place finishes as they swept Klahowya (99-39) and host Kingston (104.5-39.5) on March 22.

Senior Payton Glasser picked up a win in the discus (94 feet) and high jump (5-4), and second-place finishes in the long jump (16-6) and shot put (40-0.75) in his first-ever meet.

“He’s a good athlete,” Sequim head coach Brad Moore said. “He’s going to throw it a lot farther yet.”

Teammate Riley Cowan, a junior, took first in javelin (161 feet) and shot put (40-7.5), second in the high jump (5-4) and fourth in discus (73-10).

Riley Martin, also a junior, swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles events, with teammate Fischer Jensen in second in both.

Sequim senior Liam Byrne, competing in his first meet of the season, topped 10 feet for first place in the pole vault; teammates Connor Forderer (8-6) and Noah White (8-0) were third and fourth, respectively.

Moore said Byrne came very close to topping 10-6 and could have gone much higher that day.

“He’s going to be one of our league’s best vaulters,” Moore said of Byrne.

Sequim junior Michael Mattern-Hall took first place and set a personal best in the triple jump at 32 feet, 3 inches.

SHS junior Murray Bingham won the 1,600 meters in 4:41 and was second in the 3,200 meters (10:39). Teammate Alec Shingleton was second in both 400- and 800-meter races. Silas Isenberger, another junior, picked up a pair of runner-up finishes, in the 100- and 200-meter sprints.

“Murray ran a really solid race (in the 1,600),” Moore said, noting a tough field that included Kingston’s Stefan Lusis and Klahowya’s Lucas Becker.

The Wolves also swept the relays, with Isenberger, Martin, Logan Laxson and Darren Salazar edging out Kingston in the 4×100 race, and Laxson, Martin, Shingleton and Trey Brouillard dominating the 4×400 field by 11 seconds.

Sequim’s girls had a tougher time of it, falling to Kingston, 74-59, and Klahowya, 82-50.

SHS junior Elizabeth Sweet had a pair of first place finishes, winning the pole vault with a 9-foot 6-inch effort, and the triple jump with a 30-7 mark.

Junior Shayli Schuman scored a win in the 100 hurdles (17.75) and was second in the 300 hurdles (56.40). Senior Kiara Pierson edged Klahowya’s Savannah Smith by about 0.2 second fir first place in the 200-meter race and took third at 400 meters (1:01.17).

Kaitlin Viada, a junior, had her best throw of the season with an 85-8 javelin toss to take first place.

Sequim’s girls 4×100 relay team also took first, with Pierson, Daisy Ryan, Mary McAleer and Telicia Busby clocking in at 54.99 second.

SHS sophomore Lindsey Leader broke 28 feet in the discus (28-0.5) to place second, while Ryan, also a 10th-grader, placed second at 100 meters (14.56).

“She’s going to surprise some people,” Moore said of Leader.

The Sequim coach said SHS’s girls squad is having trouble filling out some events, as injuries and senior priorities have taken their toll on the Wolves’ roster.

“We’re just trying to get better every week,” Moore said.
