Peninsula College’s basketball squads celebrated Pepsi Throwback Night Saturday, but for Pirate coach Ali Crumb and assistant coach Mike Knowles, that came three days earlier.

A broken water main forced Peninsula College to close on Feb. 8, shifting PC’s conference matchup with Shoreline to nearby Port Angeles High School.

Crumb, who was a prep star at Port Angeles, and Knowles, who coached Crumb and the Roughriders before retiring from high school coaching, were on familiar hardwood. It showed, as the No. 7-ranked Peninsula squad rocked the visiting Dolphins 83-44.

All 12 of the Pirates saw significant playing time in the rout with Jenise McKnight leading all scorers and rebounds with 23 points and 14 boards. Anaya Rodisha had 14 points and Sephora Yayouss chipped in 13. Taisha Thomas had 12 rebounds.

Enjunay Jones-Lee led Shoreline with 13 points.

“Dwayne Johnson and Port Angeles High School really saved us tonight,” said Rick Ross, Associate Dean for Athletics and Student Life. “My coaches really wanted to get the games in Wednesday and we managed to do that thanks to our friends at the other end of Park Street. We also had a nice crowd that ventured out on a snowy night and found us.”

On Feb. 11, back in their home gym, the Pirates (7-2, 15-7) suffered a 77-71 loss to Everett, committing 20 turnovers and, despite Alicia Dugan’s 27-point effort could not overcome a 12-point deficit to start the fourth quarter.

Uju Chibuogwu led the visiting Trojans with 28 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.

Peninsula is now in a three-way tie for first in the North Region, with Skagit Valley and No. 6-ranked Bellevue.

Looking ahead

Peninsula is at Olympic (Bremerton) on Feb. 15 before their key Feb. 19 matchup with Bellevue. The Bulldogs handed PC its only conference loss, a 65-61 decision in Port Angeles on Jan. 21.

The Pirates host Skagit Valley on Feb. 22 before finishing the regular season with a pair of road games: at Edmonds on Feb. 25 and at Whatcom on March 1.
