Women’s basketball: Pirates knock off defending champs

They may be unranked, but likely not for long.

Peninsula’s women, NWAC champs in 2015 and runner-ups last season, went 2-1 at the Green River Crossover Tournament last weekend, knocking off defending champion Lane in a rematch of last season’s title game in the opener on Dec. 15.

The Pirates (7-5) came in to the Dec. 15 game against No. 1-ranked Lane winners in three of four, but the Titans — behind the strong shooting of Sarah Hall — led 34-32 at halftime. A big second-half scoring surge propelled PC to a 74-64 win, however.

Alicia Dugan led the Pirates with 21 points while Sephora Yayouss added 11 points and nine rebounds.

The story of the night, however, was Peninsula’s defense. Despite Hall’s big night (26 points, 15 rebounds), PC held Lane starters to 5-of-41 shooting (12 percent) and just 2-of-21 from the 3-point line, to go with forcing 25 Titan turnovers.

In game two, the Pirates pushed No. 3 Columbia Basin into overtime before falling 83-80, getting outsc0red 7-4 in the extra frame.

Jenise McKnight had a monster game for the Pirates, going for 27 points and 24 rebounds. Yayouss also had a double-double, getting 13 points and 10 rebounds to go with her seven assists.

Sierra Perez led five Hawks in double figures with 19 points.

In the tourney finale, Peninsula came back from a five-point fourth quarter deficit to upend their hosts from Green River, 68-64.

Anaya Rodisha led five Pirates in double figures with 17 points, while Dugan had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Tiffani Smith chipped in 13 points off the bench.

Ariana Dougall led the Gators with 21 points.

Former Sequim High standout Jordan Miller, a freshman guard on the Gators, did not play.
