Wrestling: Wolves keep Bucs down in dual

The Sequim wrestling team (5-2 in the Olympic League and 6-2 overall) won 60-18 over Kingston (1-6, 2-7) on Jan. 19.

Sequim’s Ben Newell, 138, Travis Baker, 152, Grant Pierson, 160, Austin Budd, 170, Adrian Klarich, 182, and Dylan Perreira, 195, all recorded wins and the Buccaneers surrendered six forfeits.

That weekend, Sequim took fourth at Foss’ Willie C. Stewart Invitational on Jan. 21, with 103 points to first place finishers Curtis High with 257 points.

Budd took the highest individual placement for the Wolves with a second place finish at 170 pounds. He opened with a pin and 17-0 tech fall before losing by pin to Alex Stuart of Curtis in the second round.

Pierson, 160 pounds, placed third after going 3-1 including a pin, a 9-1 win and a 12-4 win over Kristian Fairbanks of Arlington for third.

Perreira, 195 pounds, also took third going 3-1 with a pin, a 5-4 win and an injury default forfeit for third place.

Jamie Schroepfer, 126 pounds, placed fourth after recording three pins but losing the third/fourth place match by pin to Bryan Nguyen of Kent-Meridian. Klarich also took fourth at 182 pounds with an opening win, a 20-5 win in the consolation bracket and a 14-5 loss to Adam Holston of Cascade for third place.

Other finishers include Newell, 138 pounds, and McKenzie Stockdale, 220, both taking fifth place after going 2-2.

This week, the Wolves host North Mason (3-3) today, Wednesday, Jan. 25, and the All Comers Tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, in Sequim High School gymnasium.

The home matches are the last of the season prior to sub-regionals on Feb. 3-4, at North Mason High School in Belfair.
