Wrestling: Wolves ready for sub-regional tournaments on path to state

Sequim seniors had a nail-biter for their last dual meet of the season.

North Mason (3-4-1 in the Olympic League and overall) put in a tough contest but the Wolves (6-2, 7-2) prevailed at home 40-38 on Jan. 25, at home.

The decision came down to the last match at 120 pounds where the Wolves’ Dalton Brown pinned the Bulldogs’ Marissa Covarrubias with 16 seconds left and Sequim down 38-34.

He went up 2-0 in the first round and 6-0 in the second before securing the pin and team win. However, the dual opened with three wins by North Mason including a tech fall, 12-6 win and a pin before Sequim got on the board.

Sequim’s Craig Baker, 145 pounds, was hospitalized and later cleared after a throw was ruled illegal by Colton Peterson.

His brother Travis Baker at 152 pounds followed the match with a pin over North Mason’s Riley Hall in 3:48. At 160, Grant Pierson won 15-1 over Daniel Pulley helping Sequim go up 16-14.

Sequim’s Austin Budd pinned Josh Rayman at 170 in 55 seconds, too, and Adrian Klarich, 182, Dylan Perreira, 195, received forfeits to increase the team lead. However, Sequim saw back-to-back-to-back pins at 220, 285 and 106 pounds and gave up a forfeit to see North Mason go up 38-34 before Brown’s match at 120 pounds.

In exhibition matches, Sequim’s Alma Mendoza, 155, pinned Chase Evans in 1:33 in an exhibition match and Kiara Pierson, 126, also won by pin in 4:24.

For the night, 10 Sequim seniors were honored including Andres Avila, Grant Pierson, Kyle Klopfenstein, Klarich, the Baker brothers, Mendoza, Tyler Dean, Stockdale and Perreira.

Seniors also wore golden uniforms for their matches.
