Wrestling: Wolves take second at Hawkins Memorial tourney

The Bulldogs from Belfair played host to a dozen varsity teams on Dec. 28, but Olympic Peninsula teams felt right at home on the North Mason mats.

Port Angeles took top honors while Sequim placed second in the team standings at the annual Hawkins Memorial at North Mason High School.

The Wolves saw three wrestlers win their weight bracket, highlighted by Craig Baker’s three-pins-in-three-matches effort to take the 145-pound division.

Craig Baker opened with a second-period pin of Tomas Francisco Juan of North Mason. He then pinned Rudy Valdez of Port Angeles in 94 seconds in the semifinal and Diyamante Hall of Bremerton in the finals, in just 1:12.

Sequim’s Adrian Klarich, ranked No. 7 by washingtonwrestlingreport.com in the 182-pound weight class, picked up two wins to take the 182 title, pinning Bremerton’s Isaac Cuevas-Lopez in 2:59 for the title.

McKenzie Stockdale likewise went 2-0 for a championship, pinning Seth Dayton of Aberdeen in 32 seconds in the semifinal, then pinning Alexander Hollis of North Mason in 1:18 for the 220-pound weight class crown.

Sequim swept a pair of medals at 152 pounds, with Murray Bingham placing third and Travis Baker taking fourth. Bingham rebounded from a two-point loss in the quarterfinals to pick up two pins and a major (10-0) decision over Bremerton’s Nahkohe Lanham before edging his teammate 4-2 in the final.

Travis Baker also dropped a quarterfinal decision but wound up 3-2 with three pins, highlighted by a 10-second pin of Stadium’s John Brennan and a 57-second pin of Port Angeles’ Riley Gale.

Ben Newell went 3-1 to take third place in the 132-pound weight class, his lone loss a 7-1 decision to Aberdeen’s Tyler Soup. Newell came back to pin Jesus Duran of Port Townsend in 2:44 and edge Gig Harbor’s Trevor Zeitner, 9-7.

Sequim’s Grant Pierson went 3-1 to take third place in the 160-pound division, rebounding from a loss in a semifinal to pin North Kitsap’s Kye Ryan and Port Townsend’s Gabe Petrick.

The Wolves’ Chris Puksta took fifth among 138-pound wrestlers after going 3-2 overall, taking No. 3-ranked Ben Basden of Port Angeles in the third round before getting pinned.
