Youth soccer: Storm King Shockers top Tacoma for title

It was the narrowest of victories, but the young Storm King Shockers defended their home turf and in the process won a title.

The Shockers edged South Tacoma United 4-3 in the championship match at the Albert Haller Playfields on Dec. 3 to capture the North Puget Sound League Boys’ U-11 Division II title.

The Shockers posted an 11-1 record in the NPSL and went 22-3-1 overall after finishing at the bottom of the standings in 2016.

Other highlights included winning the Bainbridge Island Cup, placing second at the Tumwater Kick in the Grass Tournament, and tying a Kitsap Alliance RCL B squad 1-1.

In the championship match on Dec. 3, Matthew Miller had a hat trick — including a penalty kick that sealed the victory — and the other goal came on a cross from Grant Butterworth that deflected off a South Tacoma United defender. James Mason had an assist on the second goal.

The Shockers are coached by Michael Miller, Sante Musso and Dave Henderson. Players include Grant Butterworth, Connor Goff, Gus Halberg, Nick Jagger, Kyhlan Henderson, Maximus Lee, James Mason, Adrian Mendez, Matthew Miller, Jacob Olson, Jude Wallace and Guillermo Salgado.
