Thrift shop open Saturday

On Saturday, Aug. 20, the Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from ll a.m.-3 p.m. The living room is bursting with furniture and accessories.

Also featured will be fine jewelry, designer handbags, all kinds of clothing for everyone, kitchen appliances and dishware and lots of books and puzzles.

The shop is experiencing an all time low in volunteers, so call at 683-7044 or come by if you can work a few hours a month in the shop.

All profits from the shop are returned to the community and top to date over $2,040,000.

Shred event also collects school donations

Castell Insurance’s third-annual shred event is set for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at 426 E. Washington St.

Bring paper documents to be shredded at no charge; stapled or paper-clipped documents are allowed but no metal binder clips.

The business also will be collecting cash donations or back to school supplies for the fourth Back to School Fair, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.

Clothing giveaway at church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 815 W. Washington St., Sequim, is having a free clothing giveaway of new and used clothing from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. The items all will be in wearable condition for men, women and children. Come early for the best selection.

County commission sets Aug. 17 agenda

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The agenda includes discussion of short-term and transient lodging facilities, and discussion of size, height and/or intensity of allowed structures and uses (such as lot coverage) in rural and urban residential zoning districts. Call 417-2277 for more information.

Trinity hosts dinner

A free community dinner is served at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes baked tilapia, confetti rice, vegetables, carrot salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by email to dinners@sequimtumc.org. The church presents the dinners on the last Thursday of each month.

Air Affaire set for Aug. 27-28

Featuring skydivers, smoke planes, hot air balloons, helicopter rides, a car show, food and more, the Olympic Air Affaire is gearing up for a big 2016 event set for Aug. 27-28 at the Sequim Valley Airport, 468 Dorothy Hunt Lane, Sequim.

The event kicks off at 7 a.m. Aug. 27 with a hot air balloon launch (call 360-601-2433 or email airboss@nwplace.com for reservations) and continues from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. that day and Aug. 28 with a classic airplane fly-in, RC show (a benefit for Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County) and experimental planes, live music, safety fair and other featured events.

OTA to elect board

Olympic Theatre Arts hosts its annual meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27. The meeting is at the OTA Gathering Hall, 414 N. Sequim Ave. Board members for the 2016-2017 term will be selected. Call 683-7326 for more information.

Meetings on for memory loss caregivers

Are you caring for someone with memory loss? Do you need information and support? Alzheimer’s Association family caregiver support groups provide a consistent and caring place for people to learn, share and gain emotional support from others who also are on a unique journey of providing care to a person with memory loss. Meetings are from 1-2:30 p.m. the second Thursday of the month at Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave., Room 401, Sequim. For information, call Carolyn Lindley at 683-5294.

Salal permits offered

Permit sales for salal in Olympic National Forest will begin in September. Permits will be issued from the Forks, Quinault and Quilcene offices during business hours on the following dates: Sept. 7, Nov. 2, Jan. 4 and March 1. One hundred permits will be issued with a maximum of 15 permits for each harvest unit. A lottery system will be used if the demand for permits exceeds the supply.

Each permit will cost $150 and can be used for up to two months. For more information about salal permit sales, contact David Perez at 360-956-2316.

Harvest dinner scheduled for September

The North Olympic Land Trust is readying to host its 17th annual Harvest Dinner at 5 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10, at Sunland Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive in Sequim. Tickets are $100 per person or $115 after Sept. 1.

Flea market set

Olympic View Church of God’s fifth annual flea market is set for 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the church, at the corner of Brown Road and East Fir Street. The flea market includes a wide assortment of vintage and handmade goods available in various booths. All vendors are welcome. Spaces are $20 for 12-foot by 12-foot section. Clallam Republicans are hosting Fall Roundup

The Clallam County Republicans has their third annual fall event, The Fall Roundup, from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Home Arts Building at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles. Western wear is welcome.

Bill Bryant, Republican candidate for governor, will be the main speaker and other GOP candidates running in the November election also will be speaking. The North Olympic Library System’s digital newspaper archive is a free database now accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. It features scanned issues of more than 20 different discontinued Clallam County newspapers dating back to 1886.

To access the archive, visit the library homepage at www.nols.org and select “Local Information” from the E-Resources tab.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
