Fish habitat project to close areas in Upper Dungeness

A restoration project to improve fish habitat within the Dungeness and Gray Wolf rivers will force some closures set to start Sept. 29-30 and last up to three days.

The Olympic National Forest and the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe are partnering on the project that includes construction of log jams in three separate reaches of the Dungeness and Gray Wolf rivers on National Forest System lands, about at river mile 14.2 on the Dungeness River and river mile 0.4-0.8 and 1.8-2.0 on the Gray Wolf River.

Eleven log jams are to be placed along the four reaches of the rivers.

Log jams will be constructed from trees and materials delivered to the river channel by helicopter, national forest officials said.

During the project the public should expect closures and traffic delays in the immediate area.

Closures include:

• Forest Service Road 2870 from the junction of the 2880 to the junction of the 2870-050 including all roads, trailheads and other areas in between

• Forest Service Trails 834.1 and 834

• Dungeness River from river mile 14.2-16.0

• Gray Wolf River from river mile 0.1-2.0

For public safety, traffic will be actively managed on Forest Service Road 2880 between the Dungeness Forks Campground and the junction with Forest Service Road 2870. Traffic delays should be expected.

The Dungeness Forks Campground will be closed for the season starting Sept. 26. All trails outside of the closure area will be open during this project’s timeline time.
