The Olympic Peninsula Humane Society last week received a grant award of $10,000 from the Petco Foundation, helping the local nonprofit extend its ability to save animal lives in the community.

OPHS representatives received the funds in a presentation on July 15 at the Sequim Petco store.

With the grant funds from the Petco Foundation, OPHS has installed a generator to power the basic operations of the shelter. In addition, a 20-foot-by-30-foot commercial tent is being installed at the shelter to provide temporary housing for animals and emergency supply storage in case additional animals come to the shelter for care as a result of a fire, earthquake, tsunami or other disaster.

“This grant investment is part of the Petco Foundation’s recent distribution of more than $13 million to animal welfare

organizations nationwide,” foundation representatives said last week. In addition, the Petco Foundation distributed $1 million in emergency product and cash donations to partner organizations facing the challenges of the COVID-19 crisis.
