City arts group seeks ‘Elemental’ art submissions

The City of Sequim Arts Commission is seeking submissions of artwork that explores the concept “Elemental; Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, Metal, and Air” as a creative expression for the next exhibit in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St.

Deadline for submissions is 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6. Only digital applications will be considered. To enter, complete the form at form.jotform.com/231995536366166, which allows users to download up to three images (300 dpi preferred).

All entries will be juried by the SAC by Monday, Sept. 18. Artists will be notified of their status by Sept. 20.

The exhibit’s Artist Reception and Exhibition Opening is set for 5-7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, during the First Friday Art Walk. The exhibit will be on display Oct. 6, 2023, to Jan. 2, 2024.

Black Diamond Junction sets free Labor Day concert

Local favorite band Black Diamond Junction will present a free concert at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4. The outdoor concert, open to the public and family friendly, will take place in a field at John Wayne’s Rustic Waterfront Resort, 2634 W. Sequim Bay Road.

Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Refreshments will be available for sale at the event.

Black Diamond Junction has been voted “Best Live Performance Group” in Clallam County 2016-2022 by Peninsula Daily News readers performing classic hits from the 1960s-2000s.

The free Labor Day weekend concert has become a tradition, as the band partners with the resort each year to celebrate the end of the summer season and say “thank you” to locals and visitors alike.

Enjoy a ‘walk-about’ at garden

The Woodcock Demonstration Garden, 2711 Woodcock Road, has vibrant colors in display, ready for visitors to the free “walk-about” tour set for 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Master Gardener Gary McLaughlin will explain the differences between the 12 different varieties of dahlias that are cared for in this themed garden.

McLaughlin is a volunteer at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden and is the lead gardener in the dahlia garden. He will answer questions about care, storage and varieties plants. He also walk attendees through themed gardens such as the pollinator, rose, culinary herb, dye, potager and more.

Guides will have handouts to distribute during the tour.

After the tour, attendees are welcome to stroll around the garden or relax at one of the garden’s benches or picnic tables to have lunch.

The Woodcock Demonstration Garden is a 2.74-acre site in operation for 36 years and open to the public for educational purposes.

Shuttle, spindle guild sets meeting

The September meeting of the North Olympic Shuttle and Spindle Guild is set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 1033 N. Barr Road, between Sequim and Port Angeles.

The program includes guild member presentations from Association of Northwest Weavers Guild Conference.

Enjoy square dancing, ice cream

Rhody O’s Square Dance Club hosts a free ice cream social and square dance lesson at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.

Learn new dance steps, meet new people and enjoy the ice-cream. No experience is necessary. Couples, singles and families are invited.

World AIDS Day: Art in the Library seeks artists

The North Olympic Library System invites artists in the Pacific Northwest to submit artwork for the “World AIDS Day: Art in the Library” exhibition that will be displayed in the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Online applications at nols.org/AIDS-day-art will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 1.

Artists living with or affected by HIV/AIDS, those impacted by the journey or loss of a loved one, or individuals who have something artistic to contribute to the conversation are encouraged to apply. Works of art in any medium and format — including 2-D, 3-D, video, performance, music, poetry and more — are welcome.

The exhibition opens with a reception on World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, and remains on view through Feb. 29, 2024. Selected artists will drop off work Nov. 13-18 and may choose to list their artwork for sale; the library does not charge or take a commission. Artists may choose to remain anonymous.

Accordion social set for Sept. 10

The next Sequim Accordion Social is set for 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St.

Join fellow accordion players, enthusiasts and dancers for an afternoon of music and fun.

All players are encouraged to bring their instrument and play a few selections.

Admission is a suggested $5 donation at the door to cover the hall rental, and to thank the featured player

The featured is The Bonnie Birch Trio, a group that’s been playing together for 26 years. Birch is an accordionist who plays many styles of music. German, French and music for dancing are some of her favorites.

She will be joined by guitarist Nick Heiting and tuba player Paul Ostler, musicians she has worked with for more than 15 years.
